In October, I took a poll of the student population to determine statistics for those who liked to read for pleasure and those who did not like to read at all. When asked if they would read more if they had access to an eBook reader, an overwhelmingly high number (45% of those who do not like to read and 69% of those who love to read) would read even more.

A local mini-grant, with monies disbursed in January, will enable us to purchase 5 of these eBook readers - and the grant monies would pay for 125 high-interest reading for pleasure eBooks (to be copied onto all 5 eBook readers). These titles would be the newest and most popular young adult (YA) fiction, as it is our largest draw, and would include many of the most popular YA authors such as Kelley Armstrong, Jay Asher, Casandra Clare, James Dashner, Sarah Dessen, Neil Gaiman, Michael Grant, John Green, Anthony Horowitz, Pittacus Lore, Mike Lupica, Patrick Ness, Stephanie Meyer, Christopher Paolini – and more - favorites based on both our circulation rates and our students’ diverse interests.
Jane Brody said, “Real luxury is time and opportunity to read for pleasure.” These eBooks and eBook readers are one way to grow our high school students’ “will to read” and have more of them enjoying reading.
Working with the school nurse - a second mini-grant, with monies disbursed in January, will allow us to purchase five more eBook readers specifically addressing teen-issues such as: body image - physical health - diet & fitness - mental health: stress/anxiety, depression, self-harm, suicide - eating disorders - sexuality: dating, pregnancy, GLBT - abuse: physical, verbal, sexual, alcohol & substance - family life - teen driving – friendships - school life: surviving high school & beyond - teenage legal troubles - and relationships: healthy and abusive. The best part of this is the confidentiality it will allow our patrons, as no one will be able to tell which books a prior patron had been reading - as they will be reset after every return.
I selected this eBook reader model as it has the eInk technology which will prevent motion issues with each page change, the fewest buttons, which reduces the risk of easy breakage -- and having no wi-fi means that students can't wander the Internet using the device, especially if they've had their computer taken away for inappropriate usage.

I selected this model as it is required by three out of our four teachers of mathematics. I have made one available as an item for check out from our high school library because we have a 58% free/reduced lunch population, which clearly illustrates that not all families can support their student with this kind of financial burden. Students who need a long-term loan can borrow one directly from their math teacher.
